PHILOSOPHY 

​

The best teaching advice I ever received was this: See your students as people first, academics second. In a moment in which artists must navigate rapidly evolving technology, institutional power structures, and political uncertainty, I believe that art should be taught with an empathetic understanding of the individual, the development of community, and an emphasis on experimentation.
 

I seek to understand students’ unique strengths and struggles through open communication, establishing a foundation of trust for providing direct feedback. Through innovative critique formats, trips to nearby exhibitions, and department collaboration I stimulate student engagement, facilitating peer relationships through which students become discerning critics and mentors themselves. Secure in both their sense of self and community, my students feel safe to engage in creative risk-taking. Starting with a strong technical foundation, my classes gradually advance to more open-ended, self-directed projects. In my painting courses, students complete preliminary color, black-and-white, or digital collage studies, enabling them to experiment before developing a final project. 
 

While experimentation can lead to occasional failure, it is also crucial to success. Recognizing this, I evaluate progress based on growth, ambition, and effort, in addition to technical mastery, creating rubrics that clearly outline these expectations. I am committed to establishing a climate that encourages students to provide feedback, supported by pre-class check-ins, midterm and end-term surveys, and an anonymous comment box for questions or concerns that arise daily. Incorporating each of these elements into a culture of strong interdisciplinary thinking, I help students emerge as curious, innovative, empowered artists.
